Professor Thomas Kalling received his PhD in Business Administration from the School of Economics and Management in 2000, and became Associate Professor and Docent in 2004. He became a professor in 2008. The dissertation concerned IT and competitive advantage, and since then he has divided his research into IT and strategy. Frequently, the two fields overlap.
After the dissertation, Thomas Kalling spent 2 years working for SCA Packaging in Brussels. Upon returning to the School of Economics and Management, he shared his time between the Institute of Economic Research and the Department of Informatics. In 2006, he changed affiliation to the Department of Business Administration, where he currently is employed as professor of strategic management. Since October 2006, Dr Kalling is the Director of the Institute of Economic Research. In addition, Thomas Kalling is involved in the following research projects:
IS and Strategy: the primary focus is on the mechanisms that drive organisations and individuals to succeed or fail in creating competitive advantage and performance improvements based on IT and IS. Over the last years, business model configuration and management have become increasingly important.
IS and knowledge management: the ways in which organisations and individuals succeed or fail to adopt new IT and IS is in focus. Often, the polarisation of knowledge related to 1) decision-makers, 2) technology and 3) usage means there is a lack of relevant knowledge and support. In successful IT and IS implementations, organisations find a way to merge these three cultural subfields in terms of comprehension, language and norms and values.
Organisational learning and knowledge sharing: one synthetic framework for organisational learning and knowledge sharing says that their success depends upon three groups of factors: knowledge itself, organisational context and institutional forces. Of particular interest in this research project is to unveil the complexity of the latter two: what makes individuals wanting to learn and how does this willingness or unwillingness interdepend upon the organisational context?
Innovation management: innovative behaviour is studied from a learning perspective, and the primary research focus is how organisations behave in order to make sure they learn, and - more importantly - how they transform any learning into activity and even financial performance through new processes, products and services.
Empirically, Thomas Kalling currently works with five corporations: SCA Packaging, Trelleborg, Axis Communications, E.ON, and Ericsson.
Professor Kalling has supervised Carl Cederström (PhD 2009) and Lisen Selander (2008) at the Department of Informatics, and Niklas Persson (2010) and Katarzyna Cieslak (2011) at the Department of Business Administration. He also co-supervised Gunilla Nordström and John Gibe (both 2007) at the Department of Business Administration and Stefan Henningsson (2008) and Michel Thomsen (2010) at the Department of Informatics.
Professor Kalling is currently the supervisor to Benjamin Weaver, Lena Hohenschwert, Yaqian Wang, Wen Pan, Linn Andersson, Porntepin Sooksaengprasit and Nathalie Larsson at the Department of Business Administration, and Markus Lahtinen and Paul Pierce at the Department of Informatics.
Thomas Kalling is the programme director for the Paper and Packaging Research Programme and the Trelleborg Research Programme, and co-directs the Lusax Research Programme within the security sector.
Research makes out the bulk of Professor Kalling’s duties, but other than research and research management he takes on a range of administrative duties connected to the university:
* Director, The Institute of Economic Research
* Programme Director, Learning Partnerships at the Institute of Economic Research
* Board member, the Advisory Board of the School of Economics and Management

Thomas Kalling also teaches on and coordinates the Strategic Management course at the Dept. of Business Administration, and teaches and supervises at the E-MBA and other programmes hosted by the EFL. In addition, Professor Kalling supervises several Master theses annually within Strategic Management at the Department of Business Administration.
